Introduction to Emerald Valley
Emerald Valley, known as "翡翠谷" in Chinese, is the longest gorge at the foot of Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), extending approximately 20 kilometers. The stream running through the valley is named "Jade Creek" (碧玉溪), originating from several peaks including Liandan (炼丹), Shixin (始信), and Tiannu (天女). The valley is renowned for its dramatic rock formations, clear flowing waters, and majestic scenery. Scattered throughout the valley are over a hundred colorful pools of varying sizes and shapes. The crystal-clear waters and colorful pebbles at the bottom create a picturesque scene, which changes with the sunlight and varying light conditions, appearing at times crystal-clear and at other times a vibrant green, thus earning the valley its name, Emerald Valley.
A Tale of Love
In 1988, a group of 36 young men and women from Shanghai visited Huangshan and stumbled upon this gorge. At that time, the area was undeveloped, with rough and challenging paths. The group had to support and encourage each other to overcome many difficulties and make their way through the valley. After returning to Shanghai, ten couples emerged from the group, many having first met in Emerald Valley. This romantic connection led to the valley being affectionately known as "Lover's Valley" (情人谷). The touching stories of these couples spread far and wide, adding to the valley's allure as a place of pure, unspoiled beauty where love blossoms amidst the enchanting scenery.
